Six months ago, Orange County’s domestic violence shelter Harbor House launched Project Courage, a first-of-its-kind domestic violence awareness program. By Farah Dosani FORT MYERS – One year has passed since a Haitian national named Mesac Damas allegedly killed his wife and five children in Naples. Police say the couple had a history of domestic violence. The incident shook the Southwest Florida Haitian community – as Damas was one of their own. It made them reflect on views within their culture that have allowed domestic violence to silently occur and escalate within the community.

Meanwhile, in Orlando, counselor Joyce Pastorek runs a court-ordered batterers’ intervention program. In this video, Gaskins and Pastorek offer their perspectives on why people become physically abusive and if they can change.

By Dalia Colón PASCO COUNTY – It started in New York. Bella* was 14. Eddie* was 18. They began dating, and almost immediately Eddie became physically abusive. Bella, 32, who now lives in Pasco County, Fla., can’t recall the first incident. She says the abuse was so frequent that she only remembers the “big, big stuff,” like the time Eddie body-slammed her into the street in front of her classmates.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. WUSF will be airing “Telling Amy’s Story”, a featured documentary on domestic violence presented by Penn State Public Broadcasting. With a grant from the Verizon Foundation, WUSF Public Media also hosts “Domestic Violence: You Are Not Alone”, a local town hall meeting featuring a discussion of domestic violence issues by area experts. The documentary, “Telling Amy’s Story” and town hall premiere Sunday, October 10th, at 8:00pm EST. They air again the same evening starting at 9:30pm with additional repeats throughout the week.
