The mandatory bill (unfunded, as usual) might have been overzealous, but physical education in school is not something we suddenly added to the curriculum. I took physical education well over 50 years ago. This is another example of REMOVING something from the schools which has long been important. While the "local control" idea sounds logical, it comes from the same people who are crushing local school boards with cut after cut after cut. What it will really mean will be less, or perhaps no PE. These things are NEVER, EVER about the good of our kids; they are ALWAYS about cheaper, cheaper, cheaper. After all, the rich can afford activities for their children.

The sad thing is that the children won't be given the opportunity to learn the basic skills of sports and other activities so that they can be fit, active, and healthy for life. We can't just throw them into activity and expect them to enjoy it without the basic foundation of a quality physical education program. And, they need to be reading the studies that show that fitter children score better academically for a variety of reasons. That fitness comes from a good PE program and not from maybe a classroom teacher here and there getting the kids active during class.

Why keep P.E? Read Ratey's book "Spark" or see the PE4Life website. Compelling data on how a well crafted P.E. curriculum can effect neurophysiology to improve a child's ability to learn.
